Borrowing The Banksy Effect
Bidding frenzies have broken out during recent years over graffiti which the notorious Banksy has tagged on the walls of various buildings. Banksy-covered properties are being sold as “murals with a free house attached”. One such property recently fetched a million pounds.
A pair of art lovers from Croydon in south London spent £30,000 on a wall with a supposed Banksy work on it in the hope that it would fetch around £500,000 when resold. The graffiti artist is said to be reluctant to authenticate such work in an effort to prevent dealers from making more money from it… after all, he’s not seeing a penny.
