NORTHERN EXPOSURE

TEXT GEMMA HARRIS

Fix Up, Look Sharp

A la mode eye-openers for late autumn

DIG OUT YOUR SOUL

13-15 NOVEMBER

Grab your gold medallion and set that ’fro – it’s time for some sweet soul music. Goldsoul, the record label behind the great Northern Soul revival, is bringing a bit of oooh baby to Blackpool with its Soul Weekender (www.goldsoul.co.uk).

Expect classic Northern soul anthems, 1970s crossover, Motown, soulful dance and jazz funk at this three-day event in Blackpool Tower. There’s also a chance to enter the World Northern Soul Dance championship on Saturday night, so sharpen up those moves in the mirror first.

(WOM)ANARCHY

UNTIL 10 JANUARY

Think surrealist art and you’ll probably conjure up images of Salvador Dalí’s lobster phone or René Magritte’s faceless fella in a bowler.

The most famous of them may have been men, but the Angels Of Anarchy exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery (www.manchestergalleries. org) throws the spotlight on the ladies of the movement.

Women such as modelturned-photographer Lee Miller, painter Leonora Carrington, sculptor Méret Oppenheim (of furry teacupand- saucer fame), and Frida Kahlo, whose paintings such as Sun And Life, above, were influenced by Mexican folk art and had a dream-like quality - although she denied official links to surrealism. Not only did they leave their mark on the male-dominated art world of the time, but they also became the inspiration for a whole generation of women as the liberation movement gathered strength.

SHOOTING STARS

4-22 NOVEMBER

Get cosy and watch the big screen until your eyes water - the North’s greatest film event is back. Leeds International Film Festival (www.leedsfilm.com) turns the city movie mad as all sorts of venues, from churches to colleges, become cinemas. Besides the major releases in the Official Selection (including Jane Campon’s Bright Star, left), don’t miss Fanomenon for fantasy, action and sci-fifrom around the world; KiNETICA! for experimental works; and Short Film City, a series of mini masterpieces perfect for those who succumb to sleep after 10 minutes in the dark. Hungry for more? Many Leeds restaurants offer discounts to festival-goers.
