SUPER-SIZED SWIM
Who wouldn’t love to have an Olympic-sized pool at their holiday bolthole? A new development in Icmeler, Turkey, is offering a 250m2 pool, sauna and fitness centre, so there’s no excuse not to come back from your holiday looking buff/slinky. Surrounded by beautiful mountains and sat next to a protected forest, the development is a 20-minute stroll from town. If you need more luxury to make you feel as fabulous as a footballer’s wife, the development also offers 24-hour security. BLOOMING MARVELLOUS
Spring and the onset of warmer weather sees the Portuguese island of Madeira transformed into a tropical paradise – it’s not known as Atlantic’s “floating garden” for nothing, you know. Madeira’s Palheiro Gardens contain more than 600 species of flowers, and the annual Flower Festival sees the streets of Funchal filled with avid gardeners.
Property buyers should also be celebrating as Madeira continues to be tipped as a great investment opportunity. Property prices are 20% less than they were two years ago and there are two new golf courses due for completion in 2011.
OFF TO THE SHOPS
This month saw the opening of Dolce Vita Tejo, a new-generation shopping centre just outside Lisbon, Portugal. One of Europe’s biggest malls, it includes 122,000m2 of leisure and retail space with more than 300 shops, 11 cinemas and 30 restaurants, including Primark, Starbucks, H&M, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Staples, Jack & Jones and Zara. Dolce Vita Tejo also features Kidzania, the first children’s “edutainment” park in Europe.
GOLDEN OLDIES
According to new research by Saga, the over 50s are still buying property despite the recession. While younger couples and families have been forced to tighten their belts, older buyers are still looking to invest in bricks and mortar overseas.
A whopping one in 10 over 50s own holiday homes abroad, and for those that don’t, now could be a good time to buy, with bargain-basement price tags on many properties. So, any silver surfers out there should perhaps think of taking advantage of the low prices, with Cyprus and Turkey two of the cheapest destinations.
