If your love is for keeps then prove it

CARVE YOUR INITIALS ON A TREE
Surrounded by hills and mountains, the shores of sapphire-blue Lac Bourguet, a few kilometres north of Chambéry, provides a stunning setting for a romantic stroll. While you’re there you can use some of the local flora to create small memorial to your coupledom. Inexperienced whittlers should probably practise carving a heart pierced by an arrow on a piece of wood at home before they go. As for equipment, you could do a lot worse than one of the classic French, wood-handled Opinel lock knives which are made nearby. Choosing the right trunk is crucial if you don’t want to be branded a vandal by passing tree-huggers. It should be invisible from the beaten track so you don’t spoil the pristine scene for other walkers, but make sure you pace out some directions from an obvious landmark in case you want to make a return visit on your golden anniversary. Don’t cut too deep and keep it small – after all, you want the tree (and your memorial) to keep on growing
GET READY FOR YOUR CLOSE UP
Who says you have to be get married to hire a photographer? When in Rome, you can commission professional snapper Adam Nixon to capture an image of you both together for posterity along with the Eternal City’s most famous sights. You might choose a shot on the steps of Piazza di Spagna, in the shadows of the old marble ruins by the ancient Roman Forum, or throwing coins in the Trevi Fountain. It will certainly beat a cheesy picture with one of the phony Roman centurions outside the Colosseum. Because he’s an ex-pat who lives in the city you don’t have to worry about any language barrier and you can be sure that he knows all the best locations for the perfect romantic portrait. But in case you’re thinking of getting all cinematic and making like Anita Ekberg in La Dolce Vita, be warned that taking a dip in any of Rome’s fountains is strictly proibito (that’s banned to you or me).

GET SOME INK DONE
There are so many world-famous galleries in Paris that during a visit, you might find yourself hankering after your own personal work of art to take home – the trouble is, how do you squeeze an oil painting into your cabin luggage? You can sidestep this problem by getting something a bit more portable. Painter Florence Amblard will treat your bodies as a canvas for her surreal and beautiful art in a bijou tattoo parlour near the Père Lachaise Cemetery. Getting matching designs done is probably the sexiest – and most permanent – way to commemorate your love. And if the idea of needles makes you feel faint, be reassured that the pain really isn’t that bad – it’s a bit like being gently stung again and again in the same place by a very lazy bee. And surely that’s not too much to go through to demonstrate your commitment.
