PARIS HILTON

Blonde Ambition

Paris Hilton as a political activist? About as likely as Barack Obama and John McCain signing up to do a series of The Simple Life. But the celebutante would beg to differ. We spoke exclusively to the bafflingly-shallow-but-still-intriguing hotel heiress about her favourite subject — herself!

TEXT PHIL THOMPSON

How do you try to shake off the ‘dumb blonde’ tag?

Every day I do new things that surprise people and I just continue expanding my brand. I’ve been in this business for over ten years now and I’m a lot smarter than most people think.

During the presidential election in the US, the Republican party ran ads that implied you were just a vacuous celebrity. Were you angry about that?

I just thought it was silly for me to be involved in the first place. But I think that everything happens for a reason, and with me doing all these political videos, it definitely encouraged a lot of young voters to get involved in the last election – the most important election in our history. I also did a song for my new album called Paris for President. The music video is on this new website called SwaghouseMedia.com. It’s all about what it’d be like if I was president.

On what subjects would you like to set the record straight?

I just think there’s a lot of misconceptions about me. A lot of people think that I don’t work, and I just get money from my family. But really, I’m running a huge empire. I have my album coming out. I have my own clothing line, shoes, make-up, lingerie, purses and hair extensions. I’m running a huge worldwide business and every day I’m going to different countries to promote my brand.

I’m not a spoilt person. I’m not a bad person. I’m a sweet girl with a big heart, and I care about people. I do a lot of charity work and it hurts my feelings when people are mean, and want to say nasty things.

How would you define the Paris Hilton brand?

In style, it’s hot, fun and sexy. And it’s just, I don’t know… classy.

Do you have enough time for a personal life?

Yeah. I’m really happy. I’d love to have a family one day. That’s why I moved into a gated community – I couldn’t take living at my old house on Kings Road [in Hollywood]. It used to be, like, paparazzi and the tour buses and fans and everyone showing up every day. And now it’s a little bit more private than it was.

You mentioned that you have a new album coming out?

Yes. Some of the songs are on SwaghouseMedia.com. There’s a fun one called Jailhouse Baby which is all about my life. I wrote every song on there.

And what else is coming up for Paris in 2009?

Well, I just got back from London last night. I was shooting My New British Best Friend. And I’m gonna be doing other ones across the country. I also have a new show, which is a hybrid reality show based on my life, with [host of American Idol ] Ryan Seacrest producing it. And I’m doing another film called Pedal to the Metal, which is a comedy where I play a rock star.

What is your biggest ambition?

Just to continue doing my work, expanding my empire, and eventually opening my own hotel chains, casinos and nightclubs. And then being a great mom, and having beautiful children. Like, three or four.
