TEXT CLIVE MORRISBOOK REVIEW:
On The Tracks Of 007
Paris, Venice, Nice, New York, Hong Kong, Jamaica, the Bahamas… there’s little doubt that James Bond is a well-travelled man. This month, 007 gets some more stamps on his passport in Quantum of Solace, which sees Daniel Craig journey to Northern Italy, Panama and, of course, London.
THE EXPERTS
Two men who have dogged 007’s footsteps are Martijn Mulder and Dirk Kloosterboer…fans who have built up a website, and now a book called On The Tracks Of 007 devoted to seeking out the exact locations in the movies.
The foreword is from Bond director Guy Hamilton. “James Bond always travels first class, simply because Bond villains never reside in squalid or sordid settings,” writes Hamilton. “They always inhabit the most exclusive hotels, the largest villa, a castle, yacht, plane.”
BOND ON THE MAP
European destinations have featured on Bond’s itinerary aplenty. Paris didn’t pop up much in Ian Fleming’s novels but the area is in many of the movies. In Thunderball, Sean Connery’s Bond escapes with his jet pack at Chateau d’Anet, outside the French capital. In A View to a Kill he attends Max Zorin’s riding academy at Chateau Chantilly, north of the city. The villainous May Day, played by Grace Jones, parachutes off the Eiffel Tower and escapes via the Seine.
Venice is another city to feature prominently: From Russia with Love, Moonraker and the sobering climax of Craig’s debut, Casino Royale
Connery’s rogue comeback film Never Say Never Again featured Nice prominently – the Cote d’Azur also doubled for scenes in North Africa and Syria. It’s one way of limiting the travel budget!
FAN-TASTIC
The book leaves no stone, or indeed diamond, unturned (the fan who has dreamed of finding diamond smuggler Tiffany Case’s exact address in Amsterdam can find it at Reguliersgracht 36 and some places get duplicated. Brosnan’s Bond stays at the Kempinski Hotel, Atlantic, in Tomorrow Never Dies, but interiors were filmed at Stoke Poges Golf Club, where 007 beat Golfinger at golf all those years ago.
Each movie has a list of locations in chronological order and the authors have provided their own photographs. Perhaps someone should have used them for reconnaissance work.
On the Tracks of 007 by Martijn Mulder can be ordered by visiting onthetracksof007.com and is also available at local book shores worldwide, £18.95

PLAYLIST:
True Colours – Cyndi Lauper
Jolene – Dolly Parton
New York New York – Frank Sinatra
“True Colours is a great song and I loved it more when I heard her sing it live at a benefit. It encourages people to fin their true identity. Dolly Parton sings Joleen with such conviction. Through her signing and songwriting you can actually imagine what she looks like. New York is the greatest city in the world and this song is the anthem. Frank Sinatra is my favourite singer.
