…when the past comes back to haunt you

HALLOWEEN IN NY

The Village Halloween Parade is America’s biggest, attracting over two million people every year. If you can’t make it on the day, fear not – New Yorkers treat Hallowe’en as an excuse for several weeks of spooky partying and mayhem. You can play at dressing up all year round at Frankie Steinz (Tel: +1 212 925 1373; frankiesteinz.com) with its excellent range of offbeat combinations for couples like Alice and the White Rabbit, Napoleon and Josephine and even a dentist and tooth. And don’t miss the Blood Manor experience (Tel: +1 212 245 5794; bloodmanor. com). The brainchild of a horror-obsessed lawyer, it’s genuinely creepy – the website alone was enough to scare the bejasus out of us. Fortunately, it’s located in 27th Street, which is home to some of NYC’s best nightclubs, so you don’t have to go far for a stiff drink (a Bloody Mary perhaps?) to steady your nerves after the visit.

PRAGUE GHOST TOUR

When you’re in Prague you can get a spine-chilling introduction to the creepy side of the city with a legends and ghosts walking tour. Starting at the Old Town Square, you’re taken around some of the most ‘haunted’ streets. Spectral sightings can’t be guaranteed but watch out for an old man staggering under the weight of a sack on his back – a miser in life, his phantom is condemned to carry the gold he hoarded for all eternity. You may want to remind your other half of this grisly fate when you’re getting him to buy you that must-have designer handbag.

BLAIR WITCH CAMPING

If you’ve watched the Blair Witch Project recently you’ll probably think twice before agreeing to a camping trip. But perhaps the prospect of staying in a fully furnished, luxury tent at the picturesque Dolphinholme House Farm in Lancashire will help change your mind. With the real beds and wood-burning stove, it’s all very civilised but, at the end of the day, you’re still going to be sleeping beside 35 acres of ancient woodland with only a thin layer of fabric separating you from things that go bump in the night – even if they are only sheep. And, with the days getting shorter, you’ll have to walk through the trees in the dark at some point. Make sure you leave a video message in case you both disappear without a trace.
