Stories to tell your mates around the watercooler

1. Hit the Roof

With summer temperatures soaring into the phews, NYC tourism is suggesting you keep your Cosmoes cool by heading to the city’s rooftops. Try 60 Thomson (www.60Thompson.com), the Library Hotel (www.libraryhotel.com) or, best of all, 230 Fifth (www.230-fifth.com) — covering 22,000 square-feet high above Fifth Avenue, it’s Manhattan’s largest rooftop garden.

2. Madge turns 50

Happy Birthday To You, Happy Birthday To You, Happy Birthday Dear Ma-aaaadge, Happy Birthday to Youuuuu… Celebrate the Material Girl’s 50th on August 16 then check out her tour dates at Jet2 destinations on www.madonnacandytour.com.

3.Fun-Fest

We’re deep in the European festival season but new Lonely Planet book A Year of Festivals shows you where to find the party, whatever the month. From the frankly disturbing Baby-Jumping in Spain (yes, that’s grown men leaping over tots) to Italy’s Battle of the Oranges, it gives the low-down on 192 of the best global gatherings.

4.Leeds gets Creepy

The long-awaited Leeds City Museum opens on September 13. Spread over four floors, it includes the themed galleries, Ancient Worlds (featuring Nesyamun, the famous Leeds mummy) and The Leeds Collectors Gallery, which invites enthusiasts to show their kooky collections (the first being a Disney exhibition of over 250 pieces).

A Special Exhibitions Gallery will display temporary shows from other museums and collections. First up, it’s ‘Eating Creepy Crawlies’ from

London’s National History Museum. So, whether you want to try on a tribal costume or munch on a caterpillar, grab your coat and enjoy some culture.

5. You spin me right round…

If you haven’t been on the London Eye, you haven’t done London. An essential experience for any northerner is guessing which is north/south/east/ west and trying to peek into Buckingham Palace. Now, it’s ten times more fun with summer Pimms and year-round champagne experiences to help ward off the vertigo. For more information visit the Special Packages section of www.londoneye.com.

6.It’s grim/great up North

A survey featured in the Daily Mail revealed the A-Z of satisfaction for people living in Britain’s cities. The happiest place, according to the poll, was Bristol and the biggest misery guts were the Geordies. Manchester, rated 9th happiest city and Leeds, the 5th unhappiest.

Hmmm… beg to differ?

7.Bag Ladies

If the temptation to fork out two grand for a Fendi bag has you putting your wallet under lock and key, then you’ll love the new service from handbag hirehq.co.uk. For only £7.50 member ship a month you can have a one-night stand with a Fendi or Dior and, if you get on, you can extend your relationship to a month’s hire. Why have one piece of arm-candy when you can enjoy several on rotation?
