SHOW US YOUR MUSCLES
NOW–29 JUNE
Not for the squeamish, this one. Muscles, tendons, blood vessels and bones are all on show in their full, naked glory at this world-famous exhibition, now open at Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry.
Body Worlds 4 is the brainchild of German scientist, physician and inventor Gunther von Hagens, who has spent over 30 years studying anatomy, and now works to promote public understanding of the area.
More than 200 authentic specimens are on show at the museum, including diseased and healthy organs, as well as complete human bodies. Plastination – Dr von Hagens’ groundbreaking method of preserving the body after death – means that the exhibits become things of beauty and fascination rather than macabre objects of fear. Just the same, we wouldn’t want to get shut in there after dark.

BOLLYWOOD DOES BRADFORD
7–9 JUNE
If you’re easily offended by films which feature outrageous storylines, forbidden love affairs, drippy heroines and warbling, moustachioed villains, then you’d best steer clear of Bradford in early June. For three glorious, glamorous days the city will play host to its annual Bollywood Bazaar. You can get the henna tattoo you’ve always fancied, hunt for the ultimate in Bolly wood bling, silks and saris, and after all that shopping, take stock of your purchases over a cool glass of lassi or, for the brave of heart (and stomach), an eye-watering vindaloo.
The highlight of the event is Bollywood Steps, an over-the-top performance in Centenary Square. The show is a celebration of Bollywood films in all their technicolour glory, complete with song and dance numbers, stagey romance and quick costume changes. It’s free, so come along early and pick a good spot to enjoy the best lip-synching and hip-shaking this side of Mumbai.
KISS LIKE KLIMT
1 JUNE–31 AUGUST
The most comprehensive collection of works by the Viennese artist, Gustav Klimt, ever to come to the UK is now on show at the Tate Liverpool.
With their sumptuous gold decoration, entwined figures, and sensual imagery, Klimt’s iconic paintings are among the most instantly recognisable and popular art of the 20th century. If you want to find out more about the man behind such masterpieces as The Kiss, then you should head to the gallery on Thursday 26 June for a free evening of lively discussion and debate organised to complement the exhibition.
If that all sounds a bit too serious, the evening will also feature singer/ songwriter Ana Silvera whose eclectic sound combines classical, jazz and acoustic influences.
Visit tate.org.uk for more details and to book tickets.
X-RATED
20–24 JULY
2008 has been the year of awards for pop’s most adored diva, Kylie Minogue. After receiving an OBE for services to music in the Queen’s New Year Honours List, she went on to take the titles of International Female Solo Artist title at the Brit Awards, and Sexiest Woman at the Shockwaves NME Awards. Her mantelpiece might be groaning with trophies, but Kylie is never one to kick back and rest on laurels. She is back on tour this year, in support of her 2007 album, X, with costumes designed by Jean Paul Gaultier. Catch her at the Newcastle Metro Radio Arena on the dates above and go to www.kylie.com for further shows if you’re a trek from the Tyne.
