BAR HOPPER October 2007

BY SOPHY GRIMSHAW

PANACEA
Manchester

The Rooney-McLoughlins (pictured) and Charlotte Church are among the celebs fond of nights out at Manchester’s luxe bar-restaurant Panacea. Maybe it’ll become a hot lunch favourite too: new chef Michael Shaw, who trained with Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre White, has now introduced a Sunday lunch menu that’s available until 10.30pm. 14 John Dalton Street, Manchester, +44 (0)161 833 0000, www.panaceamanchester.com

MAMBO CAFÉ
Ibiza

Would you like to watch the famous Ibizan sunset dissolve into the sea? You could stay in Blighty and stare longingly at the webcam on www.ibiza-sunset.com, or you could visit the island’s best bar for sundowners, Mambo Café. White Isle DJs including Carl Cox are fans. “The owners are friends of mine,” Cox tells JetAway. “It’s a spot where you can see some of the most amazing sunsets the world has to offer.” Mambo Cafe, 56 Vara de Rey, San Antonio, www.cafemamboibiza.com

THE HAYMARKET
London

If you’re in London to see October’s new musical Desperately Seeking Susan, a good place for pretheatre drinks is the lounge bar at the swanky Haymarket Hotel, which opened recently near Piccadilly Circus. A house cocktail called Deep Purple, a blend of blueberries, blackberries and sloe gin, is our tip: it even matches the sumptuous berry-coloured furnishings. There’s a pre-theatre menu available at Brumus, the Northern Italian-style restaurant, too. 1 Suffolk Place, London, +44 (0)20 7470 4000, www.haymarkethotel.com

DRUNKEN FOOTSIE

A ‘mojito foot ritual’, during which tired toes are scrubbed with organic sugar, rum and mint, has become the hit pedicure from London’s Urban Solace spa (+44 (0)7914 245 353, www.urbansolace.co.uk), whose therapists make home and hotel visits in the capital. At £65 for 70 minutes, it’s rather more expensive than a round of cocktails – unfortunately they don’t do a happy hour. London’s other boozy beauty treatments include a lemon and champagne foot soak at The Parlour in Hoxton (3 Ravey Street, +44 (0)207 729 6969).

At £60, this pedi has the distinct advantage that the champagne is for drinking, while lemon and citrus oils take care of your feet. Useful for those weeks when you’ve run out of Dom Pérignon to bathe in.
